The Wisconsin Initiative for Media and the Developing Mind brings together leading scholars at UW-Madison whose research and teaching focuses on children, adolescents, and the media. The WIMDM currently includes faculty and graduate students from a number of departments on campus, including the Communication Arts Department, the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
The mission of this multi-disciplinary team is to generate scholarship that will contribute to our understanding of the influence of media in children’s lives, and thereby inform theory, policy, and media practices.
We have also created a rigorous curriculum for graduate students who are interested in learning about children, adolescents, and the media. Courses have been designed to cover topics such as child development, prosocial and educational media, violent media, cognitive effects, and learning.
We take a social scientific approach to the study of the mass media, employing a variety of methods: experiments, surveys, content analyses, and physiological laboratory work (e.g., eye tracking measures).
